CLICK HERE to sign a petition in support of Vanessa’s lawsuit against TDCJ’s unethical blanket ban on gender reassignment surgery for trans inmates.
As we move forward in support of Vanessa, we must use a variety of tactics to not only show our solidarity, but to let those in positions of power know that we are monitoring her case and will hold them accountable for the horrendous injustices they impose.
“Currently, Vanessa has a lawsuit in federal court to fight a blanket ban on sexual reassignment surgery for trans inmates in TX, which conflicts with advice made by major medical groups such as the American Medical Association and The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). In WPATH’s most up-to-date Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender-Nonconforming People, the authors state that “surgery is essential and medically necessary to alleviate their gender dysphoria” (p. 165) for many transsexual, transgender, and gender-nonconforming individuals. Vanessa’s own personal doctor, Dr. Kevin McKinney, has also deemed surgery absolutely necessary in order to alleviate gender dysphoria, which is often tied to severe mental health issues, such as suicidal ideation. The federal ban on sexual reassignment surgery conflicts with medical advice by Dr. Mckinney, jeopardizing her health as a result.”
Vanessa does not act in self interest, she fights for the rights of ALL trans inmates. Unfortunately, within the prison system, Texas is notorious for it’s especially inflated incarceration numbers of human rights violations. As we push toward a world without prisons, we must bear in mind that policy changes such as this one could literally save lives, as extreme gender dysphoria may lead to suicide. We stand with Vanessa in this continued fight to gain advances for better treatment for trans inmates in Texas.
